The LESJC: Producing Positive Outcomes

 
 

The Lower East Side Jewish Conservancy has worked actively to preserve the neighborhood's sacred sites and its cultural integrity.

Projects that the Conservancy has implemented have resulted in many positive outcomes that have benefited the community. The Conservancy has:

Barry Judelman | LESJC

  • Sponsored the designation of 32 blocks of the Lower East Side as a New York State and National Register Historic District, which recognizes the important role played by the Lower East Side in New York City and American history.

  • Placed five individual historic structures on the State and National Registers of Historic Places.

  • Secured designation of the Historic Synagogues of the Lower East Side on the National Trust for Historic Preservation's  Most Endangered Sites 2003.

  • Raised in excess of $2,000,000 from public and private sources on behalf of various Lower East Side historic structures.

  • Provided technical assistance to more than 20 historically-significant structures on the Lower East Side.

  • Established strong working relationships with NYC & NYS and preservation organizations, including: New York Landmarks Preservation Commission;  New York Landmarks Conservancy; Historic Districts Council; Greenwich Village Society for Historic Preservation; Municipal Arts Society; City Lore; Place Matters; Gotham Center for New York City History; NYS Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation; National Trust for Historic Preservation; Partners for Sacred Places; Museum of the City of New York & the Historic Houses Trust.

  • Established the Conservancy as a recognized and respected Lower East Side historic preservation organization.
